Jonathan B. Stepanian

Jon Stepanian focuses his practice on health care law and litigation, including complex medical professional liability defense. He also advises and defends health care providers in connection with professional licensure and administrative agency investigations. As first-chair counsel, he has successfully tried cases to verdict before juries in both federal and state court, including numerous medical professional liability actions on behalf of physicians and other health care professionals.

For hospitals and other major providers, Jon provides guidance on regulatory and accreditation requirements, policy review and preparation, and legal matters on a variety of issues associated with day-to-day operations. His experience includes:

  • Serving as defense counsel in complex medical professional liability actions on behalf of health care providers.
  • Providing legal counsel to health care providers on issues related to patient care, licensure, and other issues ancillary to operation.
  • Representing licensed health care providers in state licensure investigations, including the state Board of Medicine and Board of Nursing.
  • Interpreting statutory and regulatory requirements including HIPAA, HITECH EMTALA, HCQIA, MCARE, and other federal and state statutes and regulations in connection with development, compliance, and implementation of hospital policies and practices.

Jon also serves as a leader in the bar. He has held leadership positions with the, Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Civil Litigation Section governing council, including serving as Chair of the Civil Litigation Section from 2016 through 2018. He also previously served as an associate editor for Litigation News, the national publication of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation. Jon is an adjunct faculty member at the Dickinson School of Law, teaching the Medical Malpractice Workshop; he has previously served as an Advocacy adjunct faculty member, teaching law students skills necessary for litigation. Jon is also a member of the Dickinson School of Law’s Board of Law & Healthcare Trusted Advisors.
